At A/M Fence, we have years of experience building quality fences and wanted to share some great information with you.
Building a fence is not just about creating a boundary around your property; it’s also about enhancing the beauty and functionality of your outdoor space. When it comes to selecting the wood for your fence project, there are several factors to consider:
- Cedar: Cedar is a popular choice for fencing due to its natural beauty, durability, and resistance to rot and insects. Its natural oils act as preservatives, making it ideal for outdoor applications. Cedar fences have a warm, reddish-brown hue that weathers to a silvery gray over time, adding character to your landscape.
- Redwood: Redwood is another excellent choice for fencing, known for its rich color, straight grain, and natural resistance to decay and insects. Redwood fences are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly durable, making them a long-lasting investment for your property.
- Pressure-Treated Pine: Pressure-treated pine is a cost-effective option for fencing projects. The wood is chemically treated to resist rot, decay, and insect damage, making it suitable for outdoor use. While pressure-treated pine may not have the same natural beauty as cedar or redwood, it offers good value and durability.
- Douglas Fir: Douglas fir is a strong and durable softwood that is often used for fencing. It has a straight grain and a rich, reddish-brown color that can be stained or painted to match your outdoor decor. Douglas fir fences are versatile, easy to work with, and can provide a classic look to your property.
- Tropical Hardwoods: If you’re looking for a more exotic and luxurious option, tropical hardwoods like ipe, mahogany, or teak are excellent choices for fencing. These woods are prized for their beauty, durability, and natural resistance to decay, making them ideal for high-end fence projects.
When choosing the right wood for your fence, consider your budget, desired aesthetic, maintenance requirements, and local climate conditions. It’s essential to select a wood species that can withstand the elements in your area and provide you with a fence that is both functional and visually appealing for years to come.
Investing in quality wood and proper installation will ensure that your fence stands the test of time and adds value to your property. Whether you prefer the warmth of cedar, the elegance of redwood, or the affordability of pressure-treated pine, there’s a perfect wood option out there to bring your fence project to life. Preventing Gate Sag: Tips for a Long-Lasting, Functional Gate

Installing a gate can be a rewarding enhancement to your property, offering both security and aesthetic appeal. However, one common issue we often hear about at A/M Fence is that many homeowners face is gate sagging. A sagging gate can become difficult to open or close, and if left unchecked, it can lead to more significant structural problems. To ensure your gate remains sturdy and functional for years, it’s essential to understand the causes of gate sag and take preventative measures during installation. Here’s what you need to know.
Common Causes of Gate Sag
- Improper Hinges: Using undersized or low-quality hinges can lead to sagging. Hinges must be strong enough to support the weight of the gate.
- Inadequate Posts: If the gate posts are not set deep enough or are made from subpar materials, they can shift or lean, causing the gate to sag.
- Heavy Gate Material: A gate that is too heavy for its supports will inevitably sag over time. This is particularly a problem with solid wood or metal gates.
- Improper Installation: Incorrectly installed gates that do not account for natural ground movement or environmental factors can start sagging relatively quickly.
- Wear and Tear: Over time, weather conditions, use, and natural degradation of materials can lead to gate sag.
Tips for Preventing Gate Sag
- Choose the Right Materials: Select materials that are durable and appropriate for your gate’s size and purpose. For example, metal gates are sturdy but can be heavy, while wooden gates need to be treated for weather resistance.
- Use Robust Hinges: Ensure that the hinges you select are capable of supporting the weight of your gate. Heavy-duty, adjustable hinges are a great choice as they allow for adjustments over time.
- Install Strong Posts: Posts should be made from treated wood, metal, or another durable material. They must be set deep enough (at least 2-3 feet) into the ground and secured with concrete to prevent shifting.
- Proper Gate Frame Construction: A well-constructed gate frame is crucial. Use diagonal bracing within the gate frame to distribute the weight and reduce strain on the hinges.
- Regular Maintenance: Periodically check and tighten all hardware. Lubricate hinges to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. Inspect the gate and posts for any signs of wear or damage.
- Consider a Gate Wheel: For particularly large or heavy gates, a gate wheel can be added to support the weight and prevent sagging. This simple addition can drastically reduce the stress on the hinges and posts.

This project which our team of highly skilled fence contractors & iron fence/ironwork experts completed was at the Child Recovery Center for the State of Oklahoma.
The customer came to us needing a safety perimeter for an area of their campus. The staff at the center requested that this section (pictured) act as a security barrier, be able to handle a high volume of traffic with a lock box and that it be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. In short, they did not want it to look institutionalized. So, this is what we came up with: safety, security, and beauty all in one. We designed and made the sections in our shop and were able to do the main installation in one day.
Helping people resolve challenging issues, large and small, is one of the best things we get to do here at A/M Fence & Construction. Take for instance this example of a recent job we were on, as of how we work to create a product that is “Built to Last”!
Repairing or replacing an apartment fencing can sometimes be challenging due to space & time constraints, resident movement, and security issues. This project (see before & after pictures) was to replace 90 feet of old fence. There were already metal posts in place but some had to be pulled and reset because they were loose and/or leaning. We used a fast setting concrete additive on the posts that needed to be reset. Then we began working on the rest of the fence. After the concrete cured, in about an hour, we were able to attach the new fence to the repaired posts.
Here we installed cedar fence with 4” pickets. Cedar is a preferred material for fencing due to its natural ability to repel insects (i.e. termites & carpenter ants) and its durability when it comes to holding up in the extreme Oklahoma weather environment. Also, it’s a beautiful product with its reddish hue and distinctive wood grain pattern.

Highlighting A Recent Edmond Fence Construction Project
A/M Fence recently completed a job for an apartment complex in Edmond, Oklahoma and would like to share some of the details with you. We hope that we can show you how we keep everyone in mind when we work to complete a job at hand!
For convenience of the home owners that backed up to the parking lot, we removed the old existing fence in sections and installed the new fence the same day. That way their yards were not left open overnight. We can do this by adding a mixture to the concrete called “Quick Rock”. This allows us to set the posts then in about an hour the concrete has cured and we can start attaching the fencing to the new posts.
Our goal whenever possible is to use this process for the peace of mind for our customers. For example, an average yard has about 220 feet of fence. Usually we can remove the old fence and set the new posts before lunch. Then in the afternoon we can attach the new fence to the posts. This at least secures the yard so dogs can be left out overnight if needed. The next day we come back to install gates and complete any final adjustments to the fence.
At A/M Fence we take pride in completing our projects in a quick and timely manner! Contact A/M Fence for a free estimate for your next fence project today! We look forward to helping you in the near future! We serve Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Norman and many of the surrounding cities in the area!
