Swimming Pool Fence Installation and Repair

A pool fence is one of those things homeowners often put off until they realize they need it quickly, whether a new pool is going in, an inspection is coming up, or a gate is broken and no longer latching right. Whatever brought you here, the goal is the same: a fence that keeps kids and pets safe, holds up to Oklahoma weather, and doesn’t make your backyard look like a construction site. That’s what we do.

We’ve been installing and repairing fences across the Oklahoma City metro long enough to know that pool fencing comes with its own set of considerations. It’s not just about picking a style you like. The fence needs to meet code, fit the layout of your yard, and be built in a way that doesn’t create hidden hazards over time. Loose posts, sagging gates, and gaps that widen as the ground shifts are all things we see during repair calls. Getting it right from the start saves a lot of headaches later.

Fence Material Options for Pool Areas

Choosing the right material matters more around a pool than almost anywhere else in the yard. Moisture, chlorine, and repeated use all take a toll, and not every fence holds up the same way.

Wrought iron is the most durable option we offer. It’s heavy, it looks sharp, and when it’s properly coated and maintained, it lasts for decades. The tradeoff is cost and upkeep. Iron will rust if the finish gets compromised, so you need to stay on top of any chips or scratches. For homeowners who want a premium look and are willing to do some maintenance, it’s hard to beat.

Aluminum gives you a similar appearance to wrought iron without the rust concerns. It’s lighter, easier to work with, and holds paint well. Most aluminum pool fencing is powder coated, which means it resists moisture and doesn’t need nearly the maintenance iron does. It’s a popular choice for a reason.

Chain link is the most affordable option and it’s genuinely practical. It’s not the most visually striking fence, but it’s strong, it’s easy to repair, and when it’s installed correctly with the right post spacing and tension, it holds up well over time. Some homeowners add privacy slats, though keep in mind that can affect the non-climbable requirements depending on how it’s configured.

Vinyl won’t rust or rot, which makes it appealing in a wet environment. It’s lower maintenance than wood and comes in a clean, finished look that works well on residential properties. The downside is that vinyl can become brittle in extreme cold and can crack on impact. Oklahoma winters aren’t brutal, but they’re not nothing, so it’s worth weighing that.

Wood is the least common choice for pool fencing, and for good reason. It requires more maintenance, can warp or rot with constant moisture exposure, and it’s harder to meet non-climbable design requirements with a typical wood privacy fence. That said, if you have a specific design in mind and understand the upkeep involved, it can work. We’ll give you an honest read on whether it’s the right fit before we start.

Oklahoma Pool Fence Code Requirements

Oklahoma follows general residential pool barrier guidelines, but the specifics can vary depending on your city or municipality. Before any work begins, it’s worth confirming the requirements with your local building department. That said, here are the standard requirements that apply in most jurisdictions:

  • Minimum fence height of 48 inches
  • Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch on the pool side
  • Gaps between fence components can be no larger than 4 inches
  • The fence must be non-climbable in design, meaning no horizontal rails or footholds that make it easy to scale

These aren’t suggestions. They’re code requirements that exist because they save lives. We build every pool fence to meet them, and we’ll flag anything about your site or existing fence that could be a compliance issue.
